How It Works
Generation Hope: The Virginia LGBTQ+ Elder History Project records oral histories from LGBTQ+ elders ages 65 and older. Learn more about our step-by-step process below.
-
After being contacted by a potential narrator, we will reach out and set up an initial meeting. Together we will discuss the project, what the interview process is like, and information about next steps.
-
Generation Hope provides adaptable format choices for sharing stories anonymously or publicly.
Narrators choose how much, when, and what they share. The available formats for narrators are written, audio, and video.
Stories that are not anonymously written require a signed consent form prior to publicly sharing any information.
-
Interviews with narrators are conversations.
This process is adaptable to the individual needs of LGBTQ+ elders willing to share their story. Interview questions will be shared in advance.
If the interview is recorded in audio or video format, we will utilize a person-centered, trauma-informed approach and aim to create a safe, engaging experience for narrators.
For narrators who prefer a written format, they will receive a list of interview questions and are invited to write out their responses.
-
After the interview, narrators can expect a follow up email with a timeline for final review of their story.
Regardless of format, narrators review and approve their finished story before it is published to our website.
